2016: What a year it's been

Nov 2016

2016 has brought us creative simulations, innovative activations and a lot of face paint. We’ve had over 200 events all shapes and sizes call Olympia London home and welcomed more than 1.5million visitors through our doors. With 2017 round the corner, we take a step back and admire the work of some of our more experiential event organisers from whom we’ve seen the most exciting cutting-edge events brought to life. Here are our 3 favourites from the last 12 months…

London Fashion Week: Marques Almeida
During the 2016 London Fashion Week, one highly anticipated show called Olympia London home. Transforming our blank canvas venue, into a haven of light and dark, Marques Almeida launched their A/W collection to much acclaim - welcoming 700 visitors to Olympia West. Using light and playing with the flexible space enabled the designers, Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida, to bring their imaginations to life by creating a uniquely shaped catwalk which weaved through the space. The show was also live streamed to over 900 people across the globe making it a truly international event. Read more about the show here.

Sky Atlantic: The Young Pope
To celebrate their thrilling new series, The Young Pope, Sky Atlantic commissioned famed sculptor, Michael Murphy, to craft a larger than life piece, titled Saint - Sinner - Pope – Man, featuring Jude Law, who stars as Pius XIII. The team spent 8 hours assembling the 8ft x 6ft masterpiece, made from 100 hanging aluminium crucifixes and weighing 250lbs. You can see the final breath-taking sculpture here. Using the blank canvas backdrop of Olympia West it is mesmerising to watch the piece come together to portray the historical character.

Walker Stalker Con
A zombie apocalypse took over Olympia London when Walker Stalker Con came to town back in March. Olympia Grand and Olympia National were transformed into a disaster zone with thousands of cosplayers and walkers roaming the event floor to catch a glimpse of their TV heroes from hit programme The Walking Dead. After such a successful launch this year, we look forward to Walker Stalker Con returning to the venue next March; so if you’re planning on visiting, be prepared for a surprise encounter with our zombie friends.
