Earls Court And Olympia Become The First UK Exhibition Venues To Be Certified To New International Standard For Event Sustainability

01 Jul 2012

Earls Court and Olympia (EC&O Venues) have become the first exhibition venues to be certified to ISO 20121 - the new international standard for event sustainability.

The new Standard was launched on Friday 15th June and EC&O Venues’ sustainability advisor, Emma Wellman, was instrumental in its creation, having also helped develop the British Standard BS 8901. The certification was presented to Wellman at the UK launch of ISO 20121 at Canary Wharf along with other early adopters to the standard including LOCOG and Portland and Weymouth Sailing Academy who also received their certifications.

Moving forward EC&O will be aiming to achieve the following objectives in 2012:

  • Develop the support given to event organisers on sustainability by fully embedding the Carbon Voyage Transport system and developing a distribution hub
  • Increase usage of their on-line sustainability system and use it to report on events at the venue
  • Continue to monitor and measure energy, water and waste figures
  • Work with service partners to improve sustainability awareness and information on supporting services

Wellman said:

“We are extremely proud to maintain our position at the forefront of event sustainability. ISO 20121 will provide an essential template for the events industry to ensure it maximises its positive social, ethical and environmental impact. I’d like to thank all those at both Earls Court and Olympia whose tireless work has helped us achieve this milestone, and we also look forward to helping our customers attain certification themselves.”
