A new decade for opportunity

With 2019 predicted to evolve at a rapid rate, it’s no surprise that we’ve seen the industry move from strength to strength. Now, with another year behind us, we pause to reflect on our defining moments and opportunities for the future.

Read on as we catch up with Adam Parry, Editor of Event Industry News, who shares his 2019 experiences and exhibition trends for the year ahead.     

“There have been so many pivotal moments for our industry in 2019 it's hard to pin down just one but I’m certain to see this continue through 2020. More so than moments, I have been surprised this year to see the sheer number of mergers and acquisitions that’s taken place and increased interest in the exhibition industry.

Even with (and I hate to mention it) Brexit on the horizon and the uncertainty that faces travel, events and exhibitions, it feels like there have been multiple deals announced every month. All in all, these opportunities show me how positive the industry is and how much is being invested. 

In order to gain growth this year, I see the best opportunity that presents our industry is to use online platforms to build communities and from there, launch events. 

The team at SEMrush are a great example of how this can be done. SEMrush is a software as a service company based in Boston that sells online visibility and marketing analytics software subscriptions. With over a million users in over 100 countries, the company has a huge online community and they wanted to connect that audience in person. Here stems the opportunity to launch their first summit, which took place in 2019 and brought 150 customers together for a very personal event. 

I think we can learn a lot from this and look to launch smaller, niche and focused events that provide more value to the individual or community its supporting. 

And as always, I can’t talk about the future of exhibitions without mentioning, what I think will be the top trend for 2020, sustainability. With climate change taking centre stage, it is only natural that the industry will follow suit and bring the topic to the heart of events.

All in all, I eagerly await to see what 2020 holds and can already say we have an incredibly positive start to the year ahead.”
