Education and versatility are key to a career in make-up artistry, and the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show London provides that in abundance. Returning to Olympia London May 19-21, IMATS London will offer an international roster of top make-up artists teaching classes, doing live demos and sharing dynamic stories.
A wide range of make-up vendors will be there— such as Urban Decay, Bobbi Brown Pro, Make Up For Ever Paris and M.A.C. Cosmetics—selling top products and tools. Come see what new products they will unveil, or rediscover old favorites. Learn tips and tricks from the pros!
The crème de la crème of the make-up world abounds at IMATS; this is London’s largest collection of professional make-up demos, with four stages of all-day education. Keynote speakers include husband and wife team, Love Larson and Eva von Bahr, whose unique painting techniques got them nominated twice for an Oscar—for The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared (2016) and for A Man Called Ove (2017).
Barrie Gower—another keynote speaker, prosthetics supervisor for HBO’s Game of Thrones and Emmy winner for outstanding prosthetic make-up—offers a technique power-up and will be stopping by to drop some make-up wisdom. Steve Johnson offers an intriguing opportunity to relive the glory days of his XFX shop—which did make-up effects for more than 200 films, countless TV shows, commercials and music videos; he will be presenting highlights from his new book Rubberhead: Sex, Drugs, and Special FX.
Looking for some pro beauty tips? Beauty make-up gurus are around every corner at IMATS: Hannah Martin and Kate Walker are both leading bridal make-up experts, and will be discussing and demonstrating how to achieve flawless, beautiful bridal looks. Seek out Roque Cozzette for his discussion and demonstration: “Beauty Make-up, Imagery and Mixology.”
Sci-fi and horror films are represented this year by some of the best! Two incredible panels of make-up artists will converge on the IMATS stages. First, Alien: Covenant with Conor O’Sullivan and Adam Johansen; and Hellraiser, with Bob Keen, Geoff Portass, John Cormican, Cliff Wallace and actor Nicolas Vince (who played Chattering Cenobite). Hellraiser fans should not miss this opportunity to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Clive Barker’s cult classic.
As if these two heavyweight movie panels weren’t enough, Peter King (make-up and hair designer) for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will grace the stage. You may remember King for his work, and subsequent Oscar, in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Another epic event at IMATS will be the Battle of the Brushes. In this student make-up competition, international make-up students will race to create winning looks. This year’s character competition is themed Guardians of the Galaxy. The beauty/fantasy category is themed International Beauty. Join these talented students as they push their craft to new levels in this fun, creative competition.
IMATS is produced by Make-Up Artist magazine, a division of Key Publishing Group. IMATS is held annually in Los Angeles; New York; Vancouver, British Columbia; London; Toronto; and Sydney. Make-Up Artist is read in more than 70 countries and was created in 1996 by Emmy Award-winning make-up artist Michael Key.
