World Cheese Awards return to Olympia London larger than ever

The biggest cheese competition on the planet is to return to Olympia London for The World Cheese Awards’ largest gathering of cheeses to date. The event will have more global cheeses than ever and an enhanced visitor experience, transforming the space at Olympia into the Cheese Capital of the world. The event takes place at the BBC Good Food Show London from Friday 14 November to Sunday 16 November.

New entrants for this year are cheeses from Mexico, Brazil and New Zealand, which join around 2,500 cheeses from all over the world. The World Cheese Awards is the only competition to exclusively judge merits of cheese, as opposed to its related products such as butter and yoghurt. These cheeses will be the focus of around 250 judges and experts’ deliberations, as they battle it out to select the champion cheese of the world. Judging takes place from 10am until the close of day on Friday 14 November and is adjourned for a trade lunch at the elegant and intimate Apex Hall.

A brand new feature for 2014 is World Cheese TV, which ensures that the public will get to see and experience the cheeses being tasted and judged. World Cheese TV will broadcast interviews with the judges and experts from World Cheese Area, while those at home can view it via the World Cheese Awards website.

The trade day on Friday 14 November is followed by a two day ticketed event for the public to enjoy and experience an expert-led cheese tour of the World Cheese Area from BBC Radio 2’s Nigel Barden. Charlie Turnbull and John Farrand – both experts in matching cheese with beer, cider and wine – will also be offering their top tips.

“Being in London this year is a chance for cheese opinion formers to come to London and see what's happening in the world of cheese. There’s a lot that’s changed since we last were here in 2007,” commented John Farrand, MD of the Guild of Fine Food, organisers of the World Cheese Awards.

“We decided to come once more to Olympia London because it’s well located – central and accessible to the international visitors and of course, we know we’ve worked well with the teams before,” he added.

Anna Golden, Commercial Director at Olympia London, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the World Cheese Awards once again to Olympia, this time as part of the BBC Good Food Show London. Olympia West will be opened up to Olympia London as one complete venue, so visitors can flow through from once space to the other, going from a cheese wonderland to foodie heaven.”

The World Cheese Awards were previously held in Dublin and the Canaries, and organisers are looking at further global locations for 2015.

The World Cheese Awards at Olympia London follow several recent high profile international events. Olympia London recently hosted the globally growing Chocolate Show in London for its second year and Africa Fashion Week was hosted at Olympia London before launching shows in West Africa this summer.
