As an industry that is worth £36bn to the UK economy, it’s fair to say that the event market is booming. So, with this much competition, how do you go about bringing a brand new show to life? This is the question Event Director, Bill Hammond, found himself asking before launching Big Data LDN.
The answer was research; some of which brought him to the team at Olympia London.
Bill explains, “Before launching the show, I spoke to a lot of people from various facets of the industry, one of whom was Head of Sales at Olympia London, Nick Graham. He gave me a piece of advice that really stuck. Essentially, if the market you are interested in is dominated by 4 or 5 big players, then it’s not the market for you because they don’t need your event. Instead, focus on markets that have lots of independent medium size companies who are eager to have their brand make its mark.
With this in mind, Big Data LDN was shaped; a comprehensive free-to-attend two-day conference and exhibition focused on how to build dynamic, data-driven enterprises.
Launching in Olympia London’s conference centre, it was clear that the team had indeed found their niche, welcoming 3,125 attendees—more than double what they had hoped for.
With glowing feedback from both visitors and the show’s 50+ exhibitors and sponsors, Big Data LDN will be making the move into one of Olympia London’s larger spaces in its second year—with their sights set on doubling their visitor and exhibitor numbers. This level of success is almost unheard of for a brand new event.
Of their decision to call Olympia London home, Bill said, “Practically, we wanted a venue that offered great facilities and a central location, but Olympia London has the added advantage of its heritage. The ability to launch in a venue so iconic says a lot about a brand new show. In addition to our conference, I wanted the flexibility to include a small exhibition component, knowing that we’d have the opportunity to grow it to a full-size within the same venue. If you start in a hotel, it’s very hard to break away and expand.”
Of course, a great venue is not just defined by its functionality, Bill said, “The Olympia London team are great. They provide excellent service and really helpful advice the whole way. It’s that support and the little extras that truly make a difference.”
Bill continued, “I would absolutely recommend Olympia London to other shows, especially those looking to break-in to the market. We ourselves look forward to many successful years at Olympia London.”
